Fog

There has been dense black fog filling the kitchen for the past few weeks. It has been getting worse as the days have passed. This has made it difficult to achieve anything. I think Winston Churchill called it his black dog, however I like dogs too much to want to associate them with these times and anyway I wouldn't want to upset Florence.

Over the last day or so I think the fog has started to thin a little, enough anyway for me to see to make another cake from the new book.
I made a Lemon Drizzle Cake. This is what it looks like in the book

and this is what mine looks like.



I think it's a bit too brown on the outside and that is because I had to cook it for 20 minutes longer than the recipe said. I have a c**p oven obviously!

It tastes delicious and there is a lot less than this left now. As this is the third cake I have now made from this book and I have had to tweak each one I'm beginning to wonder if anyone actually tried the recipes before they published it. Perhaps I'm being unfair, I'll have to try a few more to be sure.

  1. Your cake looks absolutely lovely too! I often have to alter the baking times given in recipes; ovens and flour are so variable.

    Sorry to hear about the black fog; not a pleasant experience, I know, but hopefully lightening now? After Friday, when Florence has been collected from boarding school, there will be jolly posts for you to read, I hope!

  3. I call my the grey blanket thus no offense caused to any animals!! Hope it's lifting somewhat now and that cake is obviously just the remedy - looks lovely.

  4. Cake looks great, Sue. I have trouble with my oven - the door isn't a tight enough fit - so we have occasionally had a real fog in the kitchen! Sorry you've been feeling in what the Victorians called a brown study - I quite like that metaphor, sounds as if one has been very industrious.

  6. I love lemon drizzle cake. I've been making mine recently in a loaf tin, but everyone wants an end piece, because it is more lemony. I can see the advantage of a round version. Yours looks so yummy.

    I hate losing my motivation when the dark mood descends. I'm glad you could bake.

  7. Your comment about anyone trying the recipes was echoed in a knitting book I was reading by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (aka The Yarn Harlot)who wondered had a designer actually tried knitting some of her designs!
    It really doesn't matter what the outside looks like, it's the inside that's the most important and lemon drizzle cake is so yummy... and I think yours highly edible.

  8. Your cake looks very tasty - I always have to reduce the temp on my oven from whatever the recipe says by a few degrees. So sorry to hear about the black fog - hope it lifts and disappears for you very soon:)

  11. Aah, the dreaded black fog I know it well, up to now it's only been partial black mist for me. But I know what it feels like when the black fog shrouds every part of your brain and body.

    Totally agree that no way should it be associated with dogs... Winston what were you thinking!

    Loving your drizzle cake, I think it's more about the taste than look. I often think how many cakes were baked, before they found the right 'pouting' model to go before the camera when doing a photo shoot. Like everything 'professionally done' it's all staged. So take heart and enjoy the rest of your cake.

  12. Sorry you have been feeling down, but glad that you are on the way up again. I had trouble with cakes when we got our new cooker - either undercooked or burnt! I solved the problem by buying an oven thermometer - the knob for the oven temperature is a bit vague, so it was guesswork to turn it to the correct setting. If only you could post me a slice of that cake - it's one of my favourites!

  13. I hope the fog is lifting - thank you for your kind well wishes, even more appreciated now I know how you were feeling too! I cook with a rayburn and never follow recipes as they never seem right for my oven - I always just slam it in and take it out again when it looks right (or often I forget and it gets crispy at the edges!) as long as it tastes good, who cares what it looks like?     I bought that book a few weeks ago, but have yet to make anything from it. Initially I just liked the pictures and the 'feel' of it, but I'm being drawn to the recipes. I shall let you know if I have to do some tweeking too.

  16. I always have trouble with recipe timings as well, I think it's just because all ovens run on slightly different temperatures even though theyr'e supposed to be the same. (the cake looks fine to me by the way). My oven is always about hotter than I think it should be so I just reduce the temperature accordingly..and hope for the best! And I always cover the top of cakes with a piece of card with a hole in the middle, until the last ten minutes or so to stop them browning too much.

  17. Depression is a terrible thing. Creeps up on you like swirling mists and then suddenly you're in dense fog. Been there a few times myself. Keep a day-by-day eye on it and if it doesn't get better then see the doc. Glad to see that despite the fog you're able to have a go at the cakes - definitely a good thing to be doing.
